2011 Coastal Empire Council Merit Badge University

The Coastal Empire Council Merit Badge University will be held on November 5 and December 3 at Armstrong Atlantic State University, university hall.

The List of Merit Badges is attached. Register your scouts for 2 merit badges and include at least one alternate for each choice, since we anticipate classes will be full.

Scouts will be registered in the order in which the registration forms are received. Cost will be $12 per Scout (no refunds). The cost includes lunch on the first session – November 6. There will be additional costs: $10.00 to the Scouts for merit badges like Leatherwork, Space Exploration, Photography, etc. Scouts and their Families will be notified once registered. Make your check payable to “Boy Scouts of America” and include it with your registration form. Mail or drop off completed forms and check to Boy Scouts of America Attn: Merit badge university, 11900 Abercorn street, Savannah, GA 31419. Deadline is October 14!!

Blue Cards and Merit Badge Books. Scouts should bring properly filled out and signed blue cards or worksheets from meritbadge.com, to give to the Counselors at the first session. Please help your Scouts obtain the appropriate Merit Badge booklet for each of their classes. They need to have read the booklet prior to the first session November 6. Most of the classes will also require them do prerequisites prior to the first session.

Scout leaders: Pass on the dates to your boys now, so they can plan on attending. The November session will be from 9am-4pm with a class from 9am-12noon, 12noon-1pm lunch and a second class from 1pm-4pm. The December session will be a follow up session with a class from 9am-10:30am and another from 10:30am-12noon. Each Scout will have the opportunity to earn two merit badges. In order for them to earn the merit badge they will have to demonstrate to the merit badge counselor that they have met all the requirements for the merit badge. This will require some time and effort on the part of the Scout outside of the scheduled time of the Merit Badge University. You are the key to make sure they stay on task and complete all the requirements. The process will be much more rewarding for the Scout if he has read the booklet and completed the prerequisites prior to the first class.

Only the merit badge university counselor can sign them off for the merit badge. Therefore, if the Scout does not complete all the requirements prior to and during the two sessions then the Scout is responsible to contact the merit badge university counselor to finish the work. Our goal is for each Scout to earn the two merit badges they sign up for, however, if they do not finish the work they will not get the merit badges.

information for Merit Badge Counselors

Thank you for volunteering your time and expertise to teach merit badges. We applaud you and hope this will be a fun and rewarding experience for you as we help these scouts on their way to eagle.

First some basic information; The merit badge university will be Saturday November 6 and Saturday December 4. the November classes will be 9am-12noon and 1pm – 4pm, with the event starting at 8:30am. We will need you to be there by 7:45am to allow time to distribute materials and minimize confusion. The December classes are 9am – 10:30am and 10:30am – 12noon. These classes are mainly for you to use to check on assignments and finish up or to use as you see fit. We anticipate some merit badges or some scouts may finish all the requirements at the November meeting and may not need to meet in December. The time is available for you to use as needed.

We want to avoid putting on a merit badge factory, or even look like a merit badge factory. For this reason we have stressed that the scouts will only get the merit badge if they have completed all the requirements to the satisfaction of the merit badge counselor (that is you). In other words, if the scout does not complete his requirements during the event, he will have to get with you afterwards to do so. Please us the current merit badge requirements and do not cut corners or otherwise cheapen the merit badges. If you do not have a merit badge booklet let us know and we will get one for you. The latest, most up to date merit badge requirements are also available on the bsa website or meritbadge.com.

We need the following information from you:
1. prerequisites and a rough class syllabus
2. class size (we had anticipated – 10, if you think this less or more would be best let us know)
3. additional cost for the students e.g. for leatherworking they will have to pay for materials
4. any additional materials you need.
