ARE YOU BETWEEN THE AGES OF 13 TO 20? ARE YOU A REGISTERED MEMBER OF THE BSA? ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A NEW CHALLENGE? THEN GET READY FOR AN ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME! BE PREPARED TO TAKE YOUR SCOUTING EXPERIENCES TO A NEW LEVEL! Imagine living on a nearly deserted island for 8 days like Robinson Crusoe...Exploring the rich history and nature of the last undeveloped barrier island on the coast of Georgia...Fishing and net casting for dinner... Beach combing...Discover ancient Indian artifacts… and more! In cooperation with Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Ossabaw Island Foundation, the Coastal Empire Council, Boy Scouts of America has been given a unique opportunity to create a new summer high adventure program for Scouts and Ventur ing from across the state of Georgia.Only 40 co-ed participants will be accepted for the June 23-July 1, 2007 experience, so act quickly!! We are accepting 6 to 10 person crews (including adult leaders) from troops, crews or councils from around the state. Provisional youth participants are also encouraged to sign up. Ossabaw Island Located off the coast from Savannah, Georgia, it is the last undeveloped barrier island on the Georgia coast. Its pristine beauty, exciting history and unique environment make it an exotic location for a high adventure program. Owned by the West family since the early 1920’s, most of the island was given in trust to the state for the purpose of providing youth with an unequaled outdoor classroom for the study of natural science and barrier island development. From ancient Indian cultures...through the American Revolution… through the Civil War… to the present, Ossabaw Island has had a rich history. Now Scouts have a one of a kind opportunity. Your Island Adventure… Will be led by a qualified staff of adult volunteers, senior youth staff and statewide renowned naturalist. The 8-day adventure will operate in the Philmont style. A “staff guide” will be assigned to each crew, serving as both “trail leader” and activity coordinator. Crews will backpack to four (4) different campsites while on the island. Daily, each crew will prepare their own meals and establish their own campsites.Participants will have a chance to interact and learn from state naturalists, archeologists and scientists. Everyone will have a chance to discover how islands are formed, the importance of reefs and salt marshes, study logger head turtles and watch dolphins play. You will see how Indians, planters, slaves, farmers and soldiers all left their “footprints”. While you have the opportunity to learn lots of new stuff, there are no merit badge classes. Each crew will help determine their activities that they will participate in on a daily basis. The intent of this trek is to have fun! Everyone will have plenty of free time to explore, sit under a palm tree or go fishing. While you are there, Don’t forget to meet the “Gators”… and remember, LEAVE NO TRACE policies will be in effect at all times. Participation: We prefer for each troop, crew or council to organize its own 6 to 10 person crew (including adult leaders). Crews with less than 10 members may be asked to host provisional youth participants. We encourage individuals interested in attending to sign up!Trek Requirements for Youth:
