FIRST YEAR CAMPER

PROGRAM

Tenderfoot

Second Class

First Class

                                      “WOODSMAN”

The Woodsman Program has been designed for both the first time camper and for those Scouts who have had some preliminary Scout training on the troop level. Some boys may have been active in a local troop for some 9 to 11 months but will enjoy the opportunities and activities the program offers.

Scouts will have the unique opportunity of being able to work on requirements from Tenderfoot through the First Class ranks simultaneously in a “Hands-on” camping and pioneering atmosphere. This type of programming can assist the Scoutmaster and troop program in helping the individual Scout achieve advancements toward their prospective ranks. This program has not been designed to allow a Scout to complete all the requirements through the First Class rank during their week a resident camp.

Scouts, upon entering the weekly program, will be divided up into patrols. Patrols will consist of eight or so Scouts depending on the total number of participants during any given week of camp. This is the best proven method of training which has been very much a part of Scouting since it’s inception. The patrols will elect a temporary Patrol Leader who will serve his patrol during the encampment. The patrol will select a name and a Patrol yell and will be refereed to during the program by their name.

Daily activities will take place at an assigned time. There will be an advancement report issued to the Scoutmasters at the close of each week of the camp program. Included in that report will be a list of the Scout’s requirements that where not completed during the First-Year Camper Program and must therefore be completed in the troop setting.

WHAT THE WOODSMAN PROGRAM IS ALL ABOUT

The Woodsman Program will be conducted during the first three activity periods each morning, Monday through Friday, each week of our camp operations. The program will provide both challenging and action oriented adventures for the First Year Campers. Basic Scouting skills for the advancement from Tenderfoot through the First Class ranks will be emphasized in a way guaranteed to catch the interests and imaginations of most young Scouts!

Scouts will experience real life hiking, camping, first aid, pioneering and Scoutcraft situations. Included in the program will be instructions on safe ax, knife and bow-saw handling. The course will offer proper fire safety and fire building techniques with opportunities to earn both the FIREM’N CHIT and TOTIN’ CHIP certification cards. This portion of the program will be specially targeted following the requirements for the First Class rank. Woodman participants will receive the Official Woodman Pocket Flap patch shown above.
